Yes — Mindex is free during the private beta. You need an account and approved beta access, but there is no trial timer or credit card.
Your vault stays on your machine as plain Markdown files in a folder you choose. Mindex stores account, access, device, activity, and diagnostic data separately, but it does not upload your vault. You can back up or sync the folder with any external tool you trust.
Native desktop builds are available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. An account and approved beta access are currently required to download and use Mindex.
Like Obsidian, Mindex works on a local Markdown vault. Mindex is built around coding-agent CLIs: it maintains provider-neutral folder context and lets Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini work inside the vault, alongside the editor and local file history.
An account is required for beta access, but your vault remains on your machine. When you use AI, Mindex runs the CLI you pick — Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI — and the files or context involved in that request may be sent to that provider under its terms. Mindex does not proxy or store that AI content on its servers.
Mindex drives the agent CLI you already have installed: Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI. It uses your existing subscription, so there are no API keys to paste and no per-token billing from us. You can switch engines without touching your vault — your notes are plain Markdown either way.
Mindex does not currently include cloud sync or a Git client. Because your vault is ordinary files, you can sync or back it up with an external tool you trust.
