A note is one Markdown file with optional YAML frontmatter. That is the whole format.
A note is a .md file. If it opens in a text editor, Mindex can read it.

Notes go here, as ordinary Markdown.
The block between the --- fences is YAML. Mindex uses it for structure:
type decides which type a note is, and the remaining
keys are that type's fields.
Frontmatter is optional. A file with no fences is an untyped note and behaves like any other.
You edit these values in the frontmatter panel beside the note, or by hand in raw mode — both write the same YAML to the same file.
A frontmatter value can contain a wiki link:
owner: "[[People/Dmitriy]]"
participants:
- "[[People/Anna]]"
- "[[People/Ben]]"
Those count as real links: they appear in backlinks and in the graph, the same as a link in the body.
Changes save on their own shortly after you stop typing. ⌘S / Ctrl+S does it immediately. Every write also adds a local version — see History.
Images and other files sit in the vault as ordinary files, referenced from notes by relative path. Nothing is copied into a hidden store.
