Create a type

Define the fields a kind of note has, and where new ones go.

A type describes a kind of note: its fields, its icon, the folder new ones land in, and the body they start from.

Making one

Open the type editor and add a type. Give it:

  • Fields — a frontmatter key and a kind for each. See the kinds in Types.
  • An icon and a colour — how it reads in the tree.
  • A default folder — where new notes of this type are created.
  • A filename pattern — what they are called.
  • A template — the body a new note starts from.

Editing a built-in type

You can. Add a field to project, change what status may be, point it at a different folder. The shipped definition stays as the factory setting your version is compared against, so you can always see what you changed.

Where it is stored

.mindex/types/<id>.md in the vault. It is a file: commit it, diff it, copy it to another vault.

Tell the assistant

Mindex regenerates the types skill after a change, so the agent working in your vault knows about the field you just added. See Skills.

Types do not restrict notes

A note missing a required field is not rejected, and a key the type has never heard of is not stripped. The type decides what is shown, not what is permitted.
