The YAML block at the top of a note, and what Mindex reads from it.
Frontmatter is optional. A note without it is an untyped note.

typeThe only key Mindex treats specially. It names a
type — one of the built-in ones, or one of yours from
.mindex/types/. A type Mindex does not recognise leaves the note untyped
rather than broken.
The remaining keys are the type's fields. Which keys a type has, and what kind of value each holds, is defined by the type.

Links written this way are real links — backlinks and the graph include them.
Left alone. A type never strips a key, and a note is never rejected for having one. Mindex draws what the type describes and preserves the rest.
Reported rather than silently discarded. Raw mode is where you fix it.
