Make the tree readable at a glance instead of line by line.
Every folder, every file and every note type can carry an icon and a colour. There are around six hundred icons to choose from and ten colours.
A file tree is a list of similar-looking strings. Once a folder has a shape and a colour you stop reading it and start recognising it — which is the difference between scanning a sidebar and glancing at one.
Double-click the icon of a folder or a file in the tree to open the picker: a search box over the whole icon set, with the colour swatches under it. Right-click the row gives the same thing, and Remove icon puts the row back to its default.
For a type, set it on the type itself and every note of that kind carries it — the picker is the same one, so a type's mark and a folder's mark come from one set and cannot drift apart.
| What you set it on | Where it is kept |
|---|---|
| A folder or a file | .mindex/settings.json, as a map of path to icon and path to colour |
| A note type | the type's own definition, in .mindex/types/ |
Either way it belongs to the vault rather than to the app, so two vaults can look different on the same machine. Copy the folder and the icons come with it.
It does not reach a Git remote, though: Mindex git-ignores .mindex/ when it
sets a vault up, so someone cloning your repository sees their own defaults
until they choose otherwise.
Settings → Design → Left sidebar has a reset for icon overrides, if you want to start again.
